monetary gifts

i opened a 16th birthday invitation today. much to my surprise, at the bottom right is the sentence "WE PREFER MONETARY GIFTS". uhhhmmm, am i being too old-fashioned to think that this is downright rude?

so, i googled my query and i found out that it is indeed rude. although the article talks about wedding gifts, i believe that the circumstances are similar....

"It is considered bad manners for the bride and groom to mention anything in writing, such as placing a note in their invitations, indicating that they want monetary gifts, or where they are registered. It is presumptuous of the couple to tell guests what they expect or to imply that a gift is expected at all! Remember, this is not about the gifts or the money, this is a party celebrating your love and union, not a gift grab. xxx" www.classyannouncements.com

i don't feel like attending it anymore

so you think you're so cool

i was, am still am, a fan of sex and the city. among the many words i learned from the show was "frienemy". imagine my surprise when my 9 year old daughter said that zoe is her "frienemy", without waiting for my response, she explained what frienemy is. if i thought before that i was a cool mom, then she just deflated that notion LOL,

my own daughter thinks that i am so old she has to explain that word to me :-(

some thoughts

the ex-wife of a close friend now lives in a foreign country,

their two kids are with her.

her second marriage is to an older and well-off guy, not that she was dirt poor in

the first place,

far from it, her family is rich and she was quite spoiled here.

my friend on the other hand, although was born to an illustrious family,

saw their money dwindle on bad investments. he didn't finish college and now suffers

a bad back that requires him to use a cane when he walks, and he's not even

middle-aged :-(

when they first separated, the wife was content to leave the kids with her ex while

she seeks the "meaning of life". my friend adored their children and was especially

close with them, however, one summer, the ex-wife innocently asked my friend if

the kids can spend vacation time with her, my friend agreed. when summer was over,

the kids do not want to return to the Philippines. My friend reluctantly agreed to

let them stay with their mom.

the past two years had been pretty hard on my friend, he has shut off contact with

most of us and his sister told me that he sometimes wallows in self-pity.

today, when i opened my facebook, read this post from the ex-wife" stuck in

Interstatexxx, don't want to be late for my kid's game"

suddenly, for no apparent reason, i was engulfed in despair, i don't know why,

i felt so sorry for my friend who is alone here, not seeing his kids ......

at the same time i am afraid, afraid of the future, what if this happens to me too?

would i be able to live without my family?
